Biographical Sketch Ann
Marriner Tomey received her diploma from Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital
School of Nursing, her BSN, MSN and PhD from the University
of Colorado. She is a management consultant who has held a variety
of positions in nursing service and nursing education. She is currently
a professor emeriti at Indiana State University.
Dr. Tomey
has over 300 publications including over 38 books about the nursing
process, leadership and management, and nursing theory some of which
are in the eighth edition, have been translated into Dutch, Finnish,
German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, are printed in the Philippines and
The United Kingdom, and are circulated around the world; over 55 book
chapters; over 70 articles including numerous research reports; over 30
abstracts; and numerous book and media reviews, editorials, and
columns. She has given hundreds of presentations at the international,
national, regional and local levels.
She was
active in numerous professional organizations and has held such offices
as chair and vice-chair of the Midwest Alliance in Nursing; president,
1st and 2nd vice president of Indiana State Nurses' Association;
president of Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International; vice chair
of Council on Graduate Education for Administration in Nursing;
co-chair of the Nursing Administration Research Section of Midwest
Nursing Research Society, and she served on and chaired numerous
committees. She was also active in community service, service learning,
learning communities, and distance education.
Dr. Tomey
is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, has received the Sigma
Theta Tau International Founders Award and the Lambda Sigma Chapter
Awards for excellence in education and for research. She has received
American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Awards. She was
a distinguished lecturer for Sigma Theta Tau International,a peer
mentor for the Learn and Serve America Exchange and a grant reviewer.
She has received the Indiana University School of nursing outstanding
teaching award, the IUPUI Campus outstanding teaching award, and the IU
seven campus system award for outstanding teaching. She received the
1999 President's Medal for Excellence for exemplary faculty
performance, the Indiana State University 2000 Theodore Dreiser
Distinguished Research and Creativity Award, the 2001 Dedicated Service
Award/Mental Health Hero Award from the Mental Health Association, and
the 2002-2003 Indiana State University Caleb Mills Distinguished
Teaching Award. She was the 2003 ISU nominee for the Brian Douglas
Hiltunen Faculty Award for outstanding contribution to the scholarship
of engagement and was the 2003-2004 Indiana State University Research
Fellow for the Office of Sponsored Programs.She received a Lifetime
Achievement for Excellence in Nursing Scholarship from Lambda Sigma
Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing in
2006.
