This is the first day  of the Durga Puja. "Kola Bow" (banana tree - mythologically, the wife of 'Ganesha' the Elephant-God) is given a bath at predawn and commencement of the rituals begins. . General public celebrations pick up momentum on this day. Bathed in the Ganges
Ceremonial plantain tree or 'Kola Bow' is bathed and draped in a gold-sandalwood colored saree with deep red hemlines. The Kola Bow being bathed in the Holy Ganges River.
