Introduction

India is a land of festivals and celebrations. It has many festivals throughout the year. It is believed that there are more than 1000 deity's in the Hindu religion. Idol worship and rituals are part of the religion signifying a rich heritage. The Indian Sub-continent is divided into 25 states, each state celebrates these festivals in there own way. Most festivals have an interesting story behind them. Each festival marks the beginning or end of a season.  It is impossible to talk about all the festivals in this website.

I have chosen some of the main festivals which are celebrated in a grand way all over the country. Most of the mythological stories are about good overcoming the evil. Indians generally pray at home and also at the temple during the festivals. There are many places of shrine and temples all over the country and depict a rich tradition and philosophy about Hinduism.

This website is divided into six parts; starting off with Holi, Hanuman Jayanthi, Raksha-Bandhan, Janmastami, Durga Puja and Diwali (in chronological order). A general description is given about each festival and then a link to the mythological significance of the festival. This website will provide a general overview of these Hindu festivals.
