DASHAMI

This is day the goddess
leaves for her home with her children to Kailash. This is the day when “Sindhur
Khela” (vermillion game) is played among married women. Vermillion is
applied on each other and sweets are shared. Bengalis greet each other by saying
“Subho Bijoya” and men do
“Kolakuli” (embrace each other). The
celebrations ends with the Bengalis immersing the idol (made of clay) in to the
water to allow Durga to abode for her husband’s house, amidst the dhak, dholak
and sound of the conch shells This festival is more of a socio-cultural celebration that renews kinship with friends and relatives, rather than following a very strict religious ritual. |
