The Hancock County Youth Council's Mission is to increase education and decrease the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other illegal substances in an effort to promote a more healthy, happy, and productive lifestyle for Hancock County Youth.
This council is composed of at least two student representatives from each public high school and middle school in the county. These students meet once a month to find solutions to the substance abuse problems in the community.
The students have given presentations to the four county school boards regarding the extent of alcohol, tobacco, and drug problems in their schools. The students also presented possible solutions to the problems, which often involved no or very little cost to the school. In addition, the council has worked to publish Drug Education Pages for each of the four county high schools, in cooperation with the local newspaper and funding by area sponsors. The Youth Council also sponsors a Mock Crash and Mock Trial to show the possible consequences for driving under the influence. In June, the Youth Council participates in the Relay for Life to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
