Marian and Friends

a group photo in Harlem

This original version of this incredible photo was taken by Art Kane, a young photographer for Esquire Magazine, on a morning in 1958. Remarkably, some 50-plus jazz notables showed up on the front steps of a brownstone in Harlem, creating a historic class portrait of many of the greatest jazz musicians in America. In the front row you can see Marian McPartland wearing a sleeveless gown as she speaks with pianist Mary Lou Williams, who became the first guest on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on NPR some twenty years later.
