Composition of the Ohio River Valley Ecosystem

The Ohio River Valley Ecosystem (ORVE) is comprised of portions of 11 states and 9 of the designated Partners in Flight (PIF) physiographic regions.  Seven additional PIF regions add up to less than .07 percent of the study area.  The states of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia make up the majority of the ORVE.  These 4 states contain 78.54 percent of the land within the study area.  Missouri is not represented in the graph above.  PIF regions 14 (Interior Low Plateaus), 22, 24, and 31 contain 86.95 percent of the study area.  Over 30 percent of the study area is located in the Interior Low Plateaus.
Agriculture is the most prevalent land cover class with 43.19 percent of the total area.  Deciduous forest is 35.52 percent of the total land cover.  However, 66.73 percent of the stewardship lands are deciduous forest.  Hay/Pasture/Grassland, a very important class to many of the species of concern, is 6.29 percent of the total area, but only 1.73 percent of the stewardship areas are classified as this class.  It is important to note that the data for Ohio and Kentucky does not provide accurate information about the Hay/Pasture/Grassland class due to the original classification scheme used for these data.
