Road En-Raged

I really enjoy ripping on rude people. However, I wish that I did not have to pick on some people. I guess it's no longer funny when people are dying. Currently in our country we have a severious problem that we don't even realize is there. As a matter of fact, it is considered normal by many people to particpate in the activity that I am about to describe.

I will describe the activity using a very common situation. A person is driving on a busy interstate that loops around some major city. This person is a law abiding citizen and therefore obeys the speed limit of 55 MPH (that is the speed limit on most interstates NEAR major cities). Now suppose this person is continuously passed by vehicles. What should the driver think?

  1. I DON'T GIVE A DAMN ANYMORE ABOUT THE SPEED LIMIT! I'VE GOT TO BEAT THIS GUY IN FRONT OF ME TO THE EXIT!!!!
  2. My goodness, my speedometer must be broken! These people wouldn't speed intentionally. People just don't blatently break the law like that, do they?
  3. Ha! It's their accident!
  4. They don't like me. That's why they pass me so fast.

Now, this frightens me. The car is NOT a toy! I don't know how the average American got the idea that the US freeway is a big race but they need to undo that kind of thinking. It is that kind of thinking that is getting people killed. What is bothering me is that people are placing how fast they get from point A to point B with little or no concern for the safety of person C between A and B. This kind of driving is what makes lawmakers inclined to move the driving age up to 18 (of which I think would be the BEST thing that ever happened to the American driving culture). We simply are not taught to drive reasonably.
