Backup Tools

There are three different types of backup tools:

ARC serve
Backup Exec

Replica

The basic purpose of these three tools is to backup and restore data on a server.

 ARCserve:

 Two different versions:

  1.  Single server edition- Allows backup of one server, but multiple client PC’s

  2.   Enterprise edition- Allows backup of multiple servers and multiple client PC’s

Compatible with two servers:

  1.  NetWare- Windows 3.x, Windows 95, OS/2 and DOS

  2. Windows NT.

Basic Package:

 Single server edition

                             NetWare costs $395

                             Windows NT costs $695

 Enterprise server edition

           NetWare costs $1895

           Windows NT costs $1395

            Other options include:

Raid- $995                        Disaster Recovery for Windows NT- $395

*Image- $995                     Data Migration Storage Server- $2995

Tape Library- $595             Data Migration Agent for Windows NT server- $495

Optical Library- $1295        Data Migration Agent for Windows NT Workstation- $95

              Mainframe Backup- $6995

*Image Option not unavailable for NetWare version

The device is also available in Macintosh and Unix Ware for additional costs

$695- SCO UnixWare

$995- HP/UX, IBM/AIX, Silicon Graphics IRIX, and Sun Solaris.

 Backup Exec:

 Two different versions:

  1. Single server edition- Allows backup of one server, but multiple client PC’s

  2. Enterprise edition- Allows backup of multiple servers and multiple client PC’s

Compatible with two servers:

           1. NetWare- Windows 95

           2. Windows NT

Basic Package:

Single server edition

                NetWare costs $695

                Windows NT costs $695

Enterprise server edition

 NetWare costs $1395

 Windows NT costs $1395

Other Options Include:

Intelligent Disaster Recovery (IDR)-  It creates recovery disks for backup server, Windows NT and NetWare servers on the network, so if needed the servers can be booted from the IDR disks to recover the data.

Benefit: NetWare version of this product can be installed from a remote client PC.

Replica:

Difference: Replica copies files from the server to a tape device.

Two different versions:

  1. Single server edition- Allows backup of one server.

  2.  Intranetwork edition- Allows backup of multiple servers to a single tape device.

 Compatible with two servers:

  1. NetWare

  2. Windows NT

 Basic Package:

 Single server edition

                             NetWare costs $624

                             Windows NT costs $624

Intranetwork edition

             NetWare costs $1995

             Windows NT costs $1995

         Benefit:

  1. There is an option to download it free for 60day trial.

  2. It has the capability to keep a track of the jobs done.

  3. In disaster recovery it allows us to recover the data from the tape.

There are three different kinds of storage.

Storage Area Network (SAN)

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

SAN Attached Storage (SAS)

Basic purpose: To switch the storage away from the servers, and to be shared among multiple users.

SAN

Focused more towards fiber technology, by allowing the data to transfer on fiber optic

Channels at a high speed and bandwidths, at a distance as far as 10 Kilometers.

    Three primary components required:

Interface- It allows storage to be away from the server on the fiber channels.

Interconnect- It is the mechanism that allows to exchange data between devices like

                     hubs, switchers, gateways.

Fabric- Is the basic platform that lays out the network topology.

NA S

A disk array that directly connects with LAN interface via Ethernet and functions as a

  server in a client/server relationship.

SAS

A shared storage device that attaches multiple host servers through storage interface

like SCSI, FC. SAN is a extended storage bus, which connects to LAN’S or WAN’S, routers.
