WORLD CUP 83: INDIA v WEST INDIES,
From Kapil's autobiography:
"The first game against the Windies was going to be crucial for us.The West
Indians had won the last two world cups and were hell bent on achieving the
hatrick. This was going to be their going-away present to Clive Lloyd. The
bookmakers had installed the calypso cricketers as short priced favorites. They
were the kings of the one-day game. Their fans left no doubt about these
sentiments. They were almost saying, 'Man, this is going to be so easy'.
The scene was Manchester and old trafford turned out its traditional
English welcome.June 9 was just another day for the millions of Americans,
Chinese, Russians and East Europeans who had no cricket in their blood. For
India, and for me, it was a day of confrontation. A meeting with destiny.Play
was delayed till just after lunch. Clive lloyd won the toss again and with half
a smile invited us to make first use of the pitch. My instructions to our early
order were to blunt the edge off Marshall, Holding and Garner. Nothing flashy,
just pick up the singles. We struggled to 76 for 3 by the 22nd over. This was
the cue for an all-out offensive against the fifth West Indian bowler, Larry
Gomes. We picked up our momentum to be 140 for 5 in a furious onslaught that
lasted ten overs. By this time we were well up with the runrate but fast
running out of batsmen.
Yashpal Sharma played the innings of his life and demonstrated some
savage pulls against the pace. His 89 runs were scored off only 120 balls. Madan
lal and Binny chipped in with some handy runs and we were dismissed for 262. A
good total but not beyond the talents of the West Indies. It gave us something
to defend. Defend it we were going to-with body and soul.
The Windies started confidently and were rollicking along at a run a
minute and sitting pretty on 49 without loss. It was nearing the end of the
first day's play and the skies looked ominous once again. Rain is a part of the
culture of England. Haynes was run out going for a quick single and shorly
after Greenidge was LBW to Balwinder sandhu. We needed those break-throughs and
the West Indians ended the day at 56 for 2. It still looked safe for our
Carribean friends and next morning's papers declared their win a formality.
The next day's play started in filtered sunshine. It was a grey sun that
made the ball hold up in the air. The West Indians never got into a groove and
were searching for rhythm. Richards and Dujon were unusually hesitant and went
cheaply. Lloyd was bowled by Binny. Garner and Roberts gave us a few desperate
moments as they hit out in anger and frustration. They got close but we got
home by 34 runs. We had done it again and the world looked upon bemused. We
were being hailed as the giant killers".
Old Trafford, Manchester, 9, 10 June 1983
West Indies won the toss.
