Professional Biography

George Puia is Associate Professor of Management and Finance at Indiana State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the University of Kansas. Dr. Puia earned an M.S. in Management with an emphasis in organizational change and has completed work in mathematics and economics at Northwestern University. His undergraduate degree was a B.S. in Business Administration with a major in marketing. Prior to working at ISU, Dr. Puia served as a professor in the University of Tampa (UT) MBA program and as director of the UT Small Business Institute.

Dr. Puia has served in a variety of marketing management and general management roles. For nine years, he was an executive with Barber-Colman Company, a manufacturer serving the world-wide construction industry. During his tenure with Barber-Colman, George was responsible for the strategic plan for the energy group; eleven manufacturing divisions with revenues in excess of $120 million. For three years, he was responsible for marketing a large scale computer system used to effect energy conservation in large buildings and building complexes. As part of his Barber-Colman experience, Prof. Puia served as President and General Manager of Barber-Colman Saudi Arabia for two years, living in Jeddah for that period. Professor Puia also served as an executive with a small communications company in Chicago that was involved in television production, broadcasting and syndication, book and music publishing. He has extensive management and consulting experience. Recent clients include Dean-Witter (financial services), MedCash (healthcare), Arzco Medical Systems (manufacturing), and Parkway Foodservice (distribution).

Professor Puiaís academic research focus has been on the effects corporate restructuring on strategic competitiveness. His publications appear in Management International Review, the Case Research Journal, the Canadian Journal of Administrative Science, Proceedings of the Southern Management Association, Proceedings of the Midwest Academy of Management, Proceedings of the North American Case Research Association, the Society for Case Research and the American Hospital Association. Dr. Puia has also authored practitioner articles in the Tampa Bay Business Journal, Visions and several corporate newsletters. Professor Puia has been invited to present his work to the Strategic Management Society, Academy of Management, Academy of International Business (Brussels), Southern Management Association, Society for Case Research, Organizational Behavior Teaching Society, Western Casewriters, Midwest Academy of Management and the North American Case Research Association. He is a frequent speaker at executive conferences and workshops. Currently, Prof. Puia has the honor of serving as Editor of the Case Research Journal.
