To the Editor:
As a hunter and fisherman, I grew up with a love and respect of nature. I was raised to handle firearms responsibly, which includes never shooting anything that I am not willing to eat. Before becoming a (recent) subscriber, I did not realize that there are still shooters in this country that use live, native animals for target practice (prairie dogs and ground squirrels, among others). I find this practice appalling.
Those shooters who feel that they cannot have a good time unless something dies should try long-range pigeon- or starling-shooting: At least those are not species native to this continent.
As the editor of a widely-read shooting forum, you are in a unique position to point out just how unsportsmanlike this behavior really is. I hope you will begin to recognize and live up to this responsibility.
Sincerely,
W. Adam Phelps
