Great Shows
I have seen many, many bands, far more than I could ever remember. The
following rank as the most entertaining live bands I have ever seen. I
will tell you what makes them so great individually:
- N.I.L.8 is, without a doubt, the most entertaining band I
have ever seen perform. Musically, their sets are always tight. Lately,
especially, there is a great deal of variety between shows (which was
previously my only complaint). Just to hear Walnuts and Jeff between
songs makes it a great entertainment experience. I have never taken
anyone to a show, even if they had never heard of N.I.L.8 before, who
didn't walk out loving them.
- Morphine is another extremely entertaining band live. The
drummer looks sooooo goofy, all smiles and bouncy, while they play songs
like "Cure for Pain" or "Candy." It makes you wonder if he has ever heard
the lyrics. Otherwise, to see Dana play sax is awe-inspiring, and Mark
really sounds like he does on the records. The encore is something that I
will leave for you to find out about. A truly great live band.
- Love and Rockets, whom I saw at Metro in Chicago, are #3 on
the list. Despite the fact that Daniel Ash came out with Bono hair, they
were great. The punk rock version of "So Alive" was truly
something to behold. Hopefully they will stick around and tour again so
all of you can see them.
- The Cure is the only arena concert you will find here.
Despite the piss-poor sound quality at the Rosemont Horizon, the Cure put
on a great show, and played forever. Notable songs at this show included
"Like Cockatoos," which is in the top five of my favourite Cure songs, and
"Killing an Arab," which gave me chills. To see them outdoors, where one
could make out what Fat Rob was saying, would be even better.
- Goldfinger played Mabel's in Champaign on 3 February 1998.
Absolutely great show. They played everything (I think) off of the first
record, even "My Girlfriend's Shower Sucks." They included the very hot
ska tunes "Answers" amd "King for A Day," my two favourites from that
record. Their encore was "Mind's Eye" and the supercool Ronnie James Dio
version of Duran Duran's "Rio." Go see them.
- Descendents played the Emerson in Indianapolis last year.
Like Love and Rockets, they were a band I never thought I would get to
see. They played a long time, lots of songs (a long time for them
automatically means a lot of songs!). Milo looks more like Hank Rollins
every time I see him. Eerily enough, their encore was a bunch of Black
Flag tunes...

And....the finest live band in the world is back! They got a new
Eric, and are back on the road; check them out at N.I.L.8dotcom!
