Black Crappie (top), White Crappie (bottom)
Minnows are good live bait for crappie. Small artificials, such as Original Rapalas, should work. One of the classic ways to catch crappie is with tiny soft plastic tubes. Of course, then there's the crappie jig.
Tubes and crappie jigs should be jigged back to you. By this I mean cast, raise the rod tip, then lower it while reeling in the slack line. This makes the bait swim, then fall, ad nauseam. Crappie have big mouths and it wouldn't surprise me if they'd take decent-sized cranks, but I've not fished for them.
Try water. From what I've seen they like to suspend in open water in schools, but I don't know much about them, I'm afraid.
