Introduction to
The Godsend
Does the devil win all the rounds?
The congregation of River Grove Community Church is faced with a tough choice. Two years previously, this Midwestern, evangelical church voted out elder Ollie Fulborne, who was under suspicion of heresy and of sexually harassing a young teenage girl. But Ollie had been the driving force behind the church. Now, with numbers dwindling and church debt piling up, the people are reconsidering. With no solid evidence to support the charges against Ollie, the elder board has decided to allow him to be nominated for a return to his former position.
Church member Hila Grant is dead set against Ollie's return, not just because of his possible heresy and perversion but because he is a dictator by temperament and bound to lead the church back into the legalism from which it has so recently emerged. This intelligent, lovely, and remote twenty-eight year old decides to take a job as church secretary in order to use the position to sabotage Ollie's election bid. She is willing to use even questionable methods to remind the congregation of his record and rouse them against him.
When her efforts have an effect opposite to that intended, Hila tries to talk with people associated with the church, hoping to plumb what she calls the mystery of evil and make some sense of it all. Through emotional instability and thoughts of suicide, she continues to look for answers. Has she wasted her efforts, or was she--in some sense--a Godsend?
