Alfonso
Arau
Mexican
director and actor. Independent Mexican director who frequently produces,
writes, edits, and acts in his films. His films show great range
in both style and content, from the satiric social comment on illegal immigrants
in the United States in Wetback Power (1980) to the sensual magical
realism of Like Water for Chocolate (1992), which he produced and
directed from a screenplay by his wife Laura Esquivel, based on her novel.
The latter film was an arthouse hit that brought him international recognition
as a filmmaker, though he was already known as an actor in the US for his
performances in adventure films such as The Wild Bunch.
