Terre Haute is different from most of the other cities
in this region. Although it has a history every bit as explosive and intricate
as, say,
Bloomington, the past is burried under a layer of dust.
One can get the impression that much blood and many tears have been shed
here,
but a year is a long time for the sounds of battle to
die down. In the wake of a violent past and in the midst of a secretive
present, it is
easy to feel small and alone here. Terre Haute's supernatural
inhabitants sometimes like to refer to their home as "the Quiet Earth"
-
hushed, dark, with much hidden both beneath the ground
and beyond the glow of the streetlights.
Prince Mihal prefers to have his gatherings in public,
near a large fountain at the center of the University campus. The streets
are usually
quite deserted in hundreds of yards in every direction,
and the occasional mortal to be seen in the distance only seems to add
to the
secretive, lonely atmosphere. The pale yellow streetlights
seem to produce more shadows than light, giving the impression of vast,
dark
spaces to Kindred who are used to the indoors.
The majority of the city is the domain of the Garou, who
are rarely spotted, and their affairs most often go unseen. The mortals
enforce
peace among themselves through their vigorous "Midnight
Watch" program. Although there is an added risk of running into them, it
serves to make the affairs of the Kindred quiet and stealthy,
with outbursts of violence or confusion quickly being swallowed up by the
efforts to remain silent. Indeed, the Prince himself
is an embodiment of his city - little is seen of his regal yet ominous
presence, and less
is understood of his machinations.
