Eye of the Storm Vol. 1 Issue 3

Alright, so you've read the gladiatorial combat game information provided in Volume 1, and have played Dirk Ford and Irlo almost to the point of nausea...You want more, but don't want to dive into a full-scale tabletop war. What options are left to you? Fret no longer, for here is the information you've awaited, come to you through blessed revelations from the prophets! OK, well not quite. But it's still:

    'Gladiator in a Box'
or: A brief description of gladiator creation
Written by Joel Cropley (with assistance and additional materials from Mr. Will Nesbitt)

And now you want your own gladiator...Well, its not so easy just to want! You must toil and work and...Well, actually, its very simple: You must first choose a race and develop your character's statistics, as described by this document. Then, add in race, weight, and all those other important facts which seem useless but give you a true sense of what your character is all about. Don't be afraid or confused by the way the instructions are written, as they are intended to be useful for not only Gladiator generation, but also for creating Heroes and generals for a Battlestorm army, as well as creating characters for Incredible Adventures. (although the instructions are slightly different, especially in the case of vocational choices and improvement points)

Once you have created your character, it is now time to define him or her as a true gladiator by assigning a Gladiator Vocational Template. As with real people, every character in Fables Gamesystem has a vocation. This vocation is expressed in a "vocational template," which is something like AD&D's character classes.  In the Fables system, any character can learn any skill, It's just that its easier for a soldier to learn martial skills than a wizard. The vocational template lists all the costs for improving any skill or ability you may want to improve. There are many different vocational templates, but to create a gladiator, we will only be needing the gladiator template.

The last step in creating a gladiator is to use improvement points to, coincidentally, improve your gladiator. All that is truly important is that opposing gladiators use similar numbers of improvement points, but as a general guideline, 7 is suggested. You can use these improvement points to purchase skill ranks or increase stats, as detailed in the template you have chosen.

Here are some notes about the tables you will see on this file:

  • Entry Requirements: This is what you need to join the vocation. At any time you may change vocations, if you qualify for a different vocation.
  • Entry Costs: This is the number of Improvement Points it costs to join the vocation.
  • Base Stat improvement: The cost shows the number of Improvement Points you must spend to raise the ability by one point. Remember to apply the fine print.
  • Improvement Limit: This is the limit to which the gladiator may extend his skill, in levels.
  • Skills Improvement: The Martial skills, which is 90% of what a pit fighter needs, and is all that will be discussed in this text. The cost is the cost to raise any one skill in the family by one rank.  Note that Battlestorm has a glossary which defines many of the terms like Skill level and skill rank.
You will note, undoubtedly, the constant reference to 'skills'. In Fables Gamesystem, skills are what give a character benefits for having knowledge in an area, with the ability to hold one of several levels for each skill, based on ranks and levels. For those who haven't seen in the 1998 Ral Partha catalog, this information may be useful for explaining these terms. The skills you will most likely find useful are the martial skills, for a gladiator who doesn't know how to fight won't last long! And so, lastly, the creator of a gladiator will need to know what, precisely, these skills are. Conveniently, they have all be compiled and collected into one, easy to read tome, kept under lock and key within the Emperor's private library, where no other mortal has seen it. Or, you can just click here

And that should bring your new gladiator to a finish. It is now up to you and the luck of the fickle d30's as to whether your new 'purchase' of a fighter can stand up to and defeat your enemies in the gladiatorial pits, and bring honor and coin to your family. Good luck to you, you'll need it!
