From time to time it will be necessary to change your password. Unlike other systems which store the encrypted password so that hackers can see them, this system is setup so that only root may access your password. This to some extent eliminates the need for highly cryptic passwords. However the longer a password remains in use, the more likely it becomes insecure. To this end the system is setup to age old passwords and eventually expire them if they are not changed regularly.

To change your password, use the following command:

You will then be prompted for your old password. Enter it and press enter. You will then be prompted for your new password. Enter it and press enter again. You will then be prompted for verification of your new password. Enter your new password again and press enter.

If all went well, your new password will be accepted and you will use that new password from then on. If not you will be alerted and informed to start over.
