This command either allows or disallows messages. Messages are disallowed by specifing 'n' as the argument, and allowed by specifying 'y' as the argument. Inspection of a the output of a finger command will reveal that users with a '*' preceding their tty name are not allowing messages. Write and talk requests are barred if messages are turned off.
