David Berger reviewed Thermal Adaptation for The Quarterly Review of Biology.  Click to here download the review.

Mike Angilletta presented the lab's research on thermoregulation at a conference in Alexandria, which honored the 150th anniversary of Darwin's On the Origin of Species.

The lab hosted a visit by Jim Lovvorn of the University of Southern Illinois, who gave a seminar on thermoregulation by arctic birds. 

 

     October

Brandon Cooper successfully defended his thesis on the thermal acclimation of physiological performance in Drosophila melanogaster.

 

Mike Angilletta visited the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center for a working group about mechanistic modeling.

 

     September

The lab hosted a visit by Rick Lee of the Miami University of Ohio, who gave a seminar on the acclimation of cold tolerance.

 

Several members of the lab coauthored a review for Frontiers in Bioscience on the evolution of thermal physiology in endotherms

 

     August

Isaiah Jernberg and Jeff Tharp completed the Summer Undergraduate Research Program. Isaiah and Jeff compared the acclimation capacities of flies from northern and southern populations of Drosophila melanogaster

 

The lab completed a 2-year field experiment to test models of optimal thermoregulation in patchy environments. Stay tuned for results!

 

     July

Mike Angilletta and Brandon Cooper began a long-term collaboration with Sam Yeaman of the University of British Columbia. Sam completed a massive selection experiment, in which thermal heterogeneity and gene flow were manipulated in populations of Drosophila melanogaster. The lab acquired samples from these populations to test models of thermal adaptation.  

 

Jason Borchert joined the lab to pursue his Ph.D. on the topics of climate change and the evolution of thermal physiology. Jason

 recently earned a B.S. from the University of Washington, where he conducted independent research in the lab of Josh Tewksbury. 

 

     June Mike Angilletta visited Poland to participate in a workshop on physiological adaptation to climate change.

     May Skye Cameron of the University of Queensland visited the lab to discuss her research on invasive geckos.

Monica Stegman received an REU Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.

 

     April

Matt Schuler successfully defended his thesis on behavioral thermoregulation in spatially explicit landscapes.

 

Mike Angilletta received the Theodore Dreiser Distinguished Research & Creativity Award.

 

     March Brandon Cooper was admitted to the doctoral program at Indiana University in Bloomington. Congratulations, Brandon!

 

Mike Angilletta joined the Physiological Ecology Section of the Faculty of 1000.

Matt Schuler was admitted to the doctoral program at Washington University in St. Louis. Congratulations, Matt!

Mike Angilletta's book, Thermal Adaptation, was published in the United Kingdom by Oxford University Press. The book will be available in the United States by early March.

Brandon Cooper and Ben Williams were awarded research grants from the Indiana Academy of Science; these students study the physiological acclimation of Drosophila melanogaster in stochastic environments.

 

     November

Brandon Cooper and Mike Angilletta visited the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis to participate in a working group about mechanistic modeling.

 

     October  

Brandon Cooper & Marcin Czarnoleski designed a novel method for observing the courtship behavior of fruit flies.

 

     September

Dee Asbury successfully defends her thesis on thermodynamic constraints and the evolution of performance curves.

 

Brandon Cooper and Mike Angilletta orchestrate an artificial selection experiment conducted by students of Biology 101 (see course website for details).

 

     August

Brandon Cooper and Ben Williams publish their first paper.

 

     July

Marcin Czarnoleski received a Kosciuszko Fellowship, extending his visit to 4 December.

 

The lab began research with Drosophila melanogaster, led by Brandon Cooper.

 

     June

After a year of preparation, the lab finally started field experiments in New Mexico to test models of optimal thermoregulation. (see Research for details).

Nick Tacker received an REU Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.

Joe Ehrenberger's research was featured in the spring issue of the Sante Fe Institute Bulletin (pp. 9-11).

 

Mike Angilletta visited the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center for a working group about mechanistic modeling.
